POLICE have launched an island-wide manhunt for the suspect responsible for the country’s latest murder, and not two suspects as initially reported, a senior police official said yesterday.
However, Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander, acting officer-in-charge of the Central Detective Unit, said there were “no new developments” in their investigation into Wednesday’s shooting death of a man sitting in front of a home in the Montrose Avenue area.
That murder pushed the country’s homicide toll to 81, according to The Tribune’s records. The incident occurred on Carew Street, west of Montrose Avenue.
According to Chief Supt Fernander, around 10pm on Wednesday the deceased was sitting at the end of Carew Street west – a dead end street – with another man.
He said the men were approached from behind by a masked gunman, who fired several shots in the direction of the two men, who subsequently ran trying to evade the gunfire.
Chief Supt Fernander said the deceased was struck several times, eventually collapsing in front of a yard “just across the street”. The other man managed to get away without being struck by the gunfire, he said.
The Tribune understands that the deceased was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle, where he later died.
Police have not released the man’s identity, but residents of the area where the shooting occurred said that the victim went by the alias “Smokey” and is in his late 20s. The deceased is also a resident of that area.
Chief Supt Fernander said police did not know the motive of the shooting.
This year’s murder count has already outpaced the count for this time last year.
As of July 16, 2014, the country had recorded 65 murders.

Murder #78,79 and 80 over the Independence weekend

A MAN recently acquitted of drug charges and on bail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping was shot multiple times and killed in his mother’s yard yesterday morning.
His murder was the third since Friday in New Providence, including a man who was killed on Independence Day. This latest murder brought the country’s murder count to 80 for the year, according to The Tribune’s records. It took place shortly after 11.30am off East Street South.
Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle, Officer-in-charge of the Central Detective Unit, said the victim had just pulled into his mother’s yard with his fiancée, when he was attacked.
“We received reports that gunshots were discharged off East Street South. Officers responded and met a male lying on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds about the body. What we do know at this time is that he pulled up to his mother’s residence with his fiancée, when persons in a blue Honda Civic pulled behind them. The rear passenger exited with a handgun and began discharging shots in his direction,” Chief Supt Rolle told reporters.
“The victim was hit multiple times and died on the scene. We know that quite a number of persons were out there and saw something, we are asking those persons to come forward and talk to the police.”
Police have not identified the victim, but The Tribune understands he is 30-year-old Jason Major. Major was acquitted of drug charges in 2013 but was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.
Police are also investigating another murder that occurred a few hours earlier, around 1.30am on Sunday in the Minnie Street area.
Chief Supt Rolle said officers from the Firearms, Tracing and Investigations Unit were conducting inquiries when they heard reports of gunshots being discharged near their location.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man with multiple gunshots wounds in his body.
“Officers went to the area and learned that the victim was at a local night club on the corner off Claridge Road, dancing, when persons got involved in a fight,” Chief Supt Rolle said.
“The victim was able to get out of the establishment by jumping over a wall and running. He was pursued by his assailant who shot him multiple times, fatally wounding him. There were about 100 to 150 persons in that establishment and we appeal to them to come forward to advance this investigation.”
Chief Supt Rolle said police are not certain of the victim’s identity and are urging members of the public with a missing relative to reach out to police.
Police believe the victim – who was wearing white tennis shoes, black jeans and a green shirt – lived in the Apple Street area.
The first murder occurred around 4pm on Friday in Nassau Village.
According to reports, the victim was about to get into his vehicle after leaving a restaurant on Alexander Boulevard in Nassau Village, when two men shot him multiple times in his body before fleeing on foot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not identified the victim, but The Tribune understands he is 27-year-old Christopher Miller.
On Sunday, police said they wanted to speak with 19–year-old Brandon Antonio Sterlin Cooper of Plantol Street, who they believe can help with their investigation into Friday’s shooting.

Murder #76 occurred on Sunday July 5th 2015

THE discovery of the body of a male, found shot dead in a car on the eastern end of Fire Trail Road early yesterday morning, has pushed the country’s murder count to 76 for the year, according to The Tribune’s records.
Police have not released the name of the man, but Tribune sources have identified the victim as 41-year-old Ule “Skank” McKenzie.
According to police reports, shortly after 2am, officers responded to reports of gunshots being fired in the Fire Trail Road area. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a man in the front seat of a Honda Accord, unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
Officials pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Police are appealing to the public for assistance in solving the murder. Investigations are continuing.
This death came after police in Grand Bahama on Friday reclassified what they first thought was a traffic fatality as a homicide.
Police initially thought that a 31-year-old Williams Town man was killed as a result of a car crash in bushes on Creswell Road early last Thursday morning. However, on further investigation, they confirmed that it was not an accident that resulted in the man’s death.
Inspector Terecita Pinder of Grand Bahama police reported that stab wounds were discovered in the victim’s upper chest area. An 18-year-old man is helping police in that investigation.
These killings came more than a week after State Minister for National Security Keith Bell said the government is winning the war on crime, even as this year’s murder count outpaces the number recorded last year at this time.
Speaking in the Senate on June 24, Senator Bell suggested that homicides should not be the sole indicator of how bad the country’s crime situation is.
“We are winning because we have a comprehensive plan to address crime criminality,” he added. “We have implemented programmes to attack crime and its causes.”

Murder #75 Recorded on the island of Grand Bahama on Thursday July 2nd 2015

WHAT initially appeared to be a traffic fatality in Grand Bahama has now become a homicide investigation, taking the country’s murder count for the year to 75.
Police initially thought that a 31-year-old Williams Town man was killed as a result of a car crash in bushes on Creswell Road early on Thursday morning. However, on further investigation, they confirmed that it was not an accident that resulted in the man’s death.
Inspector Terecita Pinder of Grand Bahama Police reported that stab wounds were discovered in the victim’s upper chest area. Although police have not yet released the victim’s name, the deceased man is believed to be Vernon Smith, aka ‘Five-O’ of Williams Town.
His death takes the island’s murder count to seven for the year.
According to police reports, sometime around 7am on Thursday officers
received information about a traffic accident on Creswell Road. It was reported that a man was driving a black 2004 Ford Escape, which crashed into a large pine tree in bushes. When officers arrived at the scene, the deceased was discovered dead outside the vehicle.
“Initial reports are that on Thursday 2nd July 2015, this matter was reported as a traffic fatality,” Isnpector Pinder said. “Further investigation into the matter, and with the assistance of a pathologist, stab wounds to the upper chest of the deceased were discovered.”
Inspector Pinder added that officers of the Central Detective Unit had arrested an 18-year-old male resident of Caravel Beach, who is assisting them with their investigation.
Due to this, Grand Bahama’s traffic fatality count stands at seven for the year, not eight as reported.
